This is so so so so awesome.

Short answer questions on job applications.

I hate short answer questions because they are both vague and important. With no word limit and a variety of ways to answer them, the fact that they stand in the way of an interview is daunting. 

Simply put, there is no better way to send me in a panic attack than to ask “How do you know the students are learning?” Do you want me to explain the importance of frequent and varied formative assessments, or do you want me to talk about pre and post tests? Do you want me to give specific examples? Is one paragraph enough, and what is the line between writing too little and writing too much?

Also, would anyone in the #education community be willing to proof read my answers?

So last June (when I graduated) the website Edzapp was all the rage for Oregon’s application process. We were told that checking this one resource would keep us up to date on Oregon’s employment opportunities. At last week’s job fair I learned that now most districts aren’t using it. I’m currently going to every district’s website to find out how to apply, and they’re all slightly different.

It makes sense that there were so few jobs last year, as I just wasn’t aware of most of them. A year of job hunting frustration for naught. Especially since, guess what, it’s not very hard to get into the sub pool just over the freeway. I am kicking myself for not checking individual districts before, and just going off of what’s on Edzapp.

Learn from my mistakes, fellow teaching applicants. Don’t rely on one employment resource, be it Edzapp or TalentEd. Check the website for each district you want to apply for.  So endth the lesson.

Don’t get me wrong, I am very lucky to have two jobs.

Especially one that’s really accommodating to the inconstancy of substitute work. However, I went about getting a shift covered the wrong way last night, and I’m worried the boss is mad at me. I don’t think he is, but also I worry about everything. I’m worried this will effect his decision whether or not to keep me on after the holidays.

This is all relevant because there’s an overlay in my shifts today, leading to 12 straight hours of work. Don’t let anyone ever tell you I don’t have a good work ethic. This will be fun. I’m subbing in the tutoring center, so I don’t have to worry about the performance aspect of the classroom. It’s quiet and peaceful, and at least I won’t be on my feet all 12 hours.

Writing Curriculum Proposals for a job interview!

I would teach one class, independently, to a group of home schooled children. I’m presenting a curricula to a parent right now, who is gathering the group together.

Freelance educator, yeah!

I’m writing two curricula proposals right now, one for creative writing and one for colonial American history. It would only be $30 a week, but that’s better than the next to nothing I’m making now. Plus, I’ve got that itch to teach.
